Plug-in solar: the technical reference
What the law permits, what the product specification requires, and what the connection rules add on top. Written for people who want the clause rather than the summary.
1.1What this reference covers
Plug-in solar photovoltaic devices intended to be connected to a domestic low voltage installation through a standard socket outlet, and operated in parallel with the distributor's network.
It does not cover conventional roof-mounted PV under BS 7671 Section 712, building-integrated PV, plug-in battery systems, plug-in solar combined with batteries, or plug-in generation from anything other than solar. Those are outside the approved class and outside this reference.

1.3How to read the numbers
The statutory instrument sets a maximum rated alternating current output of 800 watts. The product specification sets a maximum apparent power of 800 VA. These are not the same quantity and this site does not treat them as interchangeable. Where a figure matters, the clause names which document it came from.
Version 1.0, June 2026, is stamped Withdrawn on every page and still circulates. Only Version 2.0, July 2026, is current. If a document you are reading does not say Version 2.0, check it.
